Functional Training

Functional training needs open floor more than it needs machines. The equipment is often the cheapest part of the zone — what it really costs you is the square metres you have to leave empty.

What a functional zone needs

Clear floorThe defining requirement. Allow a working area no equipment intrudes into.
Appropriate flooringTurf for sled work, shock tile where things get dropped. See Gym Flooring.
A cable or trainer stationA functional trainer covers a wide movement range from one footprint.
Loadable small equipmentKettlebells, medicine balls, slam balls, bags.
Bands and suspensionCheap, versatile, near-zero storage.
Storage on the perimeterEverything off the floor between uses, or the zone stops working.
Ceiling heightOverhead throws and jumps need genuine clearance.
SightlinesFor group and PT use, the coach must see the whole zone.

Common questions

How much space does a functional zone need?

For one or two people, around 10–15 m² of genuinely clear floor. For small-group training, 25 m² upward depending on class size. The number that matters is clear floor, not total area including the equipment around the edge.

Do I need a rig?

Only if you are running group classes or need multiple attachment points at once. For most home and corporate gyms a functional trainer plus small equipment covers the same ground in far less space and at lower cost.

What flooring works for sled and throw work?

Turf strips for sleds, and shock-absorbing tile where balls and weights land. Standard rubber tile does neither job well, so this is worth specifying by zone rather than laying one product throughout.
