Cardio is where most gyms overspend and under-plan. The machine matters less than choosing the right mix for who actually uses the room — and leaving the clearance behind a treadmill that safety requires.

Choosing between machine types

In a mixed-use gym, plan for variety before quantity. Four different machine types serve a room better than four treadmills — until you are big enough that queueing decides it.

How much space does a treadmill really need?

The machine footprint plus 1.5 to 2 m of clear space behind it. That run-off is a safety requirement, not a nicety — it is where you end up if you lose your footing. It is the single most commonly ignored clearance in home gyms.

Home or commercial rating?

Cardio is where duty cycle matters most, because motors and bearings run continuously. Anything in a shared, unsupervised or commercial setting should be commercial rated — warranty cover often depends on it.

Which needs the most servicing?

Treadmills, by a distance — belts, decks, rollers and motors are all consumables under real use. Budget for that from the start rather than discovering it. See Maintenance.
