Strength Equipment

Strength equipment splits into three families that solve different problems. Most rooms need some of each — the mistake is buying deeply into one before covering the basics of the others.

The three families

Selectorised machines

Pin-loaded stacks with a fixed movement path. Safe for unsupervised and beginner users, fast between sets, no plates on the floor. The backbone of hotel, corporate and school gyms.

Plate-loaded and racks

Racks, cages, Smith machines and plate-loaded stations. More range, more skill required, more floor space and more clearance. Essential for serious training floors.

Free weights

Dumbbells, barbells, plates and benches. The most versatile per dirham spent and the least demanding on power and installation — but they need storage, or they become a hazard.

Machines or free weights for a new gym?

It depends who trains there. Unsupervised, mixed-ability users are better served by machines — fixed movement paths are safer and less intimidating. Experienced users want racks and free weights. Most commercial floors carry both, weighted toward whoever actually turns up.

How much weight should I stock?

Cover the range people use rather than the extremes. In most facilities the middle of the dumbbell range gets almost all the traffic, and heavy plates sit untouched. Buy depth in the middle first, extend the top end later if demand shows up.

Do racks need special flooring?

Yes. Racks and anywhere weights are set down need heavier rubber, and dropped-weight areas need a dedicated platform. See Gym Flooring.
